Frequently asked questions

  1. Can I use Timy?

You sure can! All you need is a Basecamp Plus account. Timy does not work as a standalone application. It was built to make time tracking easier in Basecamp. The app works on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and some Linux distributions such as Ubuntu.

  2. Do I have to rearrange my entire Basecamp setup?

No. The only thing you need to do is apply a to-do list to your project(s) in order to make it work.

  3. What is Timy?

Timy is an easy-to-use desktop application to complete your timesheet. It uses the Basecamp API to exchange data. Basecamp is a well-known web-based project management tool.

  4. Who needs Timy?

Freelancers, small businesses and professional teams in every industry can benefit by introducing Timy. Do you need to track time? Does your line of work require filling out a timesheet on a daily/weekly/monthly basis? Are you used to working with Basecamp? Then Timy is the ultimate tool for you.

  5. Can I use Timy with a OpenID based Basecamp account?

Yes. If you registered with Basecamp using an OpenID account, you can use your Basecamp API token to log in to Timy. The Basecamp FAQ explains how to do this.

  6. How does Timy Desktop work?

What you see is what you get

    • On the left you’ll find a list of all the projects you have been assigned to and that you have checked in the preferences pane.
    • The status bar in the bottom left corner indicates what Timy is currently doing.
    • The week pane on the right holds the days of the week. This is where your time entries will be displayed.
    • Use the ‘week bar’ on top to select the appropriate week. Go to the previous or next weeks by clicking on the week number.
    • The big number in the time entry box represents the time spent on the project. The small number indicates the decimals (e.g. 1.5 is 1 hour and 30 minutes).
    • There is a space to enter comments for each time entry. Click on the text balloon to turn the block around.
    • You can delete a time entry by dragging it to the bomb, or back to the list on the left.

    Preferences view

All projects that you have been assigned to, will appear in the preferences view.

    • You can show and hide projects from the project list by checking or unchecking them in the preferences pane.
    • You can easily change the project colour.
    • Clicking on the column headers sorts the grid.
    • After synchronization, new projects are marked with an orange ‘new’ icon. You can sort on creation date to see the latest projects.
    • Use the search box for filtering. It filters on project and company names.
  7. How do I retrieve my project list?

The first time you use the application, your project data is synchronized from the server. Every time a project is added or archived in Basecamp, the application will ask if you would like to synchronize your data. You can always synchronize using the system tray menu.

  8. How can I synchronize my projects?

The icon next to the projects tab is the synchronize icon. You can click on it to synchronize your projects with the server. The icon starts blinking when your local cache is out of sync.

  9. How can I save my entries?

Use the save button to save your project and time entries into Basecamp. Use the refresh button to retrieve the time entries from the server. All unsaved changes will be discarded.

  10. How can I make time entries?

Simply drag and drop projects from the project list onto the week pane.

  11. How do I delete time entries?

To remove a project from the week pane, drag the project back onto the project list or to the bomb. The project and time entry blocks can be selected by clicking on the top half of the component.

  12. Can I copy a project block?

To copy a project block in the week pane: press CTRL+drag.

  13. Can I enter project comments?

There is a space to enter comments for each time entry. Click on the text balloon to turn the block around and enter text. Turning the block around automatically saves the comment.
